Technology Tip: Backing up files from the internet!

Technology Tip:
Backing up files from the internet!

Do you have photos on facebook, videos on YouTube?  Everything is great until you want them offline.  You could go to each site to download them or you could make your life very easy and go to a website called SocialFolders.  This is a service that syncs web content to desktops.

To get yourself started, you download a utility to your desktop that creates a SocialFolders folder you can access via Windows Explorer.  Then you can go to socialfolders.me, where you create an account, identify and connect your social services, which can include any of the following: Box, Evernote, Facebook, Flicker, Google Docs, Instagram, Photobucket, Picasa, SmugMug, Twitter and YouTube.  You can use SocialFolders Web interface to determine how much information you want to sync (all your facebook albums or select a few) and the content you choose will automatically download to your desktop. SocialFolders lets you upload files, too.  It is an easy and fast way to make sure that you always have a backup of your precious online data.

Technology Tip: July 9th Internet Doomsday! You might not have internet.

Technology Tip:

July 9th Internet Doomsday! You might not have internet.

There is s a Trojan out there that has tricked computers both PCs and Macs, into redirecting all their Internet traffic through malicious servers.  Even though the Trojan’s creators have been stopped and arrested, millions of PCs could still be infected.  For those machines, the Internet will not exist on July 9.

In the year 2007 was when the first Trojan surfaced according to PC World.  The malware, which infects both Windows and Mac computers, creates a botnet by changing the machines accessed domain name server (dns).

A Domain Name Service is how the web organizes its addresses.  It is a system that lets you simply type in “mashable.com” instead of some kind of long IP address filled with letters, decimals and numbers.  Your computer talks to a DNS server operated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to find all the websites that you visit every day.

The trojan, called a DNS Changer, redirects your computer’s DNS queries from your ISP’s server to one created by the trojan’s creators which hijacks all Internet traffic from your machine.  That way, the bad guys can send you to hacker-created websites filled with ads whenever they want.

There is good news!  The FBI shut down the operation, called Rove Digital, last November when they arrested six Estonian nationals behind the botnet and shut down their malicious servers to ensure infected computers wouldn’t be cut off from the Internet entirely, the FBI set up its own DNS servers.

But, of course there is some bad news.  Those servers will soon be shut down. They were originally going to run only four months, but a judge ordered an extension of their operation until July 9 since it’s estimated that hundreds of thousands of computers are still infected.

If a machine still has the trojan and tries to access the web on July 9, it won’t be able to access anything.  With Internet access cut off, it would be very inconvenient to download and install anti-virus software.

If you would like to know if your computer has been infected try this link http://www.dns-ok.us/

If your computer has been infected, do not panic, we can help you!  We have great programs that help protect against virus and malware for your computers.  If you do have the infection we can safely and completely remove it for you.

Technology tip of the day: What is Vishing.

Technology tip of the day:

What is Vishing.

In another blog you might remember we talked all about Phishing.  You probably remember that phishing involves using emails to direct you to a fake website where you unintentionally type in your personal information.  In one version of phishing you receive an email that seems to be from your bank or another financial institution.  In the email, they inform you that you have to go to a specific website and re-confirm your account information.  We know that the link they provided is a fake website and if you type into it you are just going to give them (the scam artists) the information they need to empty your accounts.

Most banks and financial institutions have gotten wise to this scam and they have policies to never contact you via email to ask you to "re-confirm" your account information.  Con artists know this so they started doing what is called "vishing."

Here's how a vishing scam works:  You receive an email that appears to be from your bank and it informs you that you need to call a specific phone number to re-confirm your account information.  The number they provide is bogus and when you call them and give them your account information they simply use it to access your accounts illegally and take your money.  So instead of using a fake website to "fish for information" they are using a fake phone number to fish for your voice.  That is why it is called “vishing”.

If you want to learn more you can search the internet for vishing scams, email scams, Identity theft or Fake phone numbers, or of course you can call us!  We can spend time helping you spot these trends and keep you safe!

Hope you learned something!

Technology tip of the day: Learn the language

Technology tip of the day:

Learn the language

It is called "Texting" or "IMing" and it refers to the sometimes complex language of abbreviations and acronyms that people use to communicate via cell phone Text Messages and online Instant Messages.

Here as some examples:
Lol     =        Laughing out loud
Dis     =        This
Whr    =        Where
Ruok? =        Are you okay?
BRB    =        Be right back
Xlnt    =        Excellent
Gr8     =        Great
Any1   =        Anyone

This is the language of cell phones, instant messaging etc everywhere in the world.  Its function is to minimize the number of key strokes and punctuation needed to communicate a message.  It is officially called Short Message Service or SMS Language and here's a link to more information about it's development:

Parents, next time you possibly see a conversation of your son or daughter learning this language can help you understand!

If you want to learn more, Wikipedia has a good list of these abbreviations.

Technology Tip:

Just Googling around.

The internet is huge and if you want to use it effectively you have to be familiar with search engines.  Google.com has become the search engine of choice for many internet users.  There are many others as well. But Google seems to be the best choice for many.  Part of the reason they are the best is that they keep developing new ways of looking at the internet.  Below are a couple additional features that Google offers that you might want to check out now and in the future as they continue to develop:

http://news.google.com/  Need a current event?  Use the internet like to find stories that are only minutes old.

Technology Tip: Twitter 101!

Technology Tip:

Twitter 101!

Twitter, one of the newer social networks.  Many people ask what is twitter and how does it work?  Twitter is “a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”  Many people do not use twitter because they are confused to how it works; well here are a few quick tips to help you understand twitter better!

What happens if I put an “@Username” first in my tweet?
One thing that gets confused frequently is how to use @mentions. The most important bit here is that if you start a tweet with an @username, then only the person following you and the person you are replying to will see the tweet. Normally this is a tiny amount of people, as starting a tweet with a username is mainly used to interact with only one person.

However, by glancing over your timeline, anyone can see this tweet, it just won’t come up in their stream of tweets.

How many people can I follow?
Twitter has imposed a limit on the follow ratios of your account in order to keep aggressive following that has little to do with interests low.

You can follow up to 2000 people without any limits. Beyond that, you can always only follow 10% more then people following you. So if 4000 people follow me, I can at most be following 4400.

How often should I tweet?
When I first came on to Twitter, I was blown away, by how often some people are Tweeting. Don’t worry; you don’t need to pump out dozens of Tweets at the start.

Some interesting research suggests that tweeting 2-5 times a day, as you start out, is totally fine. Simply go ahead and fine what works best for you. In general, there is no rule to this, but in order to get the hook of Twitter, starting to tweet regularly has worked very well for me.

How can I follow hashtags and what are they?
A topic that long remained a mystery for many people was the use of hashtags. In short, they allow you to connect everyone on Twitter using a certain keyword, putting a “#” in front of it. So
instead of following individuals you can follow these words, such as #twitter, #startups or any other term you can think off.

You can simply click on the hashtag in your Twitter stream and see all the people mentioning the same keyword.
Hope these tips help you become a twitter fan! Enjoy your day!!

Technology Tip: Online Classifieds

Technology Tip:

Online Classifieds

Have you ever looked through the classified ads?  Maybe you looked through to find a car, a job or some cheap furniture.  You can practically find anything in the classifieds.  It is familiar to all of us but it is also getting replaced by some new online resources.

Craigslist.org - This site was founded by Craig Newmark and is based out of San Francisco but has sites all around the world.  Along with thousands of classified ads it has several discussion groups.  Check out their factsheet for more information.  You might even have something you'd like to post.  All postings are completely free, you just have to log on with an email address and follow their rules.

Realtor.com - There are lots of real estate listing sources out there and this is currently the most popular one, but there are several others.  Need a house? Just want to check out the local market?  Search for Multiple Listing Service properties online.

Zillow.com - Here's another real estate source.  This site combines all kinds of publically available resources including satellite maps to give you a pretty good overview of a neighborhood.

Monster.com - One of many jobs websites that are on the internet.  Anyone from teaching to business can find a job on this website.

Your Local Paper – This one is a good online resource for your classified needs.  Don't forget to check out the online versions of local newspapers to see what they have to offer too as well! For example the Atlantic City Press is a good example of a local paper

Technology Tip: Have you gone phishing today?

Technology Tip:

Have you gone phishing today?

Phishing is the slang term for using email to get people to share their personal information so it can be used to steal their identity.  Con artists use phishing emails to literally "fish" for information that they can use to illegally access bank accounts and open credit card accounts.  Here are two obvious phishing emails in my mailbox that I thought I’d share with you as examples of Phishing.
For some reason Best Buy decided to offer me not just a $500 gift card but also a $1000 gift card this morning.  Here are the emails I found:

Look similar?  You have probably seen many types of “unbelievable” emails before.  If you have not you will see them sooner or later.  These emails were sent out by a scam artist who wants to get some personal information.  Here’s what the email says:

It says I’m eligible for a “FREE $1000 Best Buy gift card” so I better hurry up and click on the link to find out how to get it right?

If you click the link here’s what happens, you get redirected from the original link listed above to another site that looks like this:

In case you were wondering here’s what the real Best Buy Gift Card website looks like:

The first thing you should notice about the links in the email and the website is that the addresses are obviously not “Best Buy” websites.

The link in the email:  http://cangetoffer.info:8080?

The link I was redirected tohttp://www.myeliterewards.com/

The actual Best Buy addresshttp://www.bestbuy.com

The first hint that this is a scam was the fact that “It is too good to be true” The second hint is the web addresses are bizarre compared to the actual Best Buy address.
The fake Best Buy website can be convincing.  For example, at the bottom of the page they have some pretty convincing links to a “Privacy Policy” and “Terms” but on these pages you can find a third hint that this is an illegitimate offer.  At the bottom of the official looking “Privacy Policy” is this address:

So, just out of curiosity, what happens if you type in an email address and “Click Here to Submit and Continue”

Then you'll be redirected to this site:

Looks legitimate but of course it is not.  The whole goal of email phishing is to get your personal information.  This webpage is what everything else was about.  If they can get you to share your address and phone number and other personal information they can start to collect the elements they need to steal your identity.  Please note that this is not a Best Buy website and that their logos as well as the logo for FedEx were stolen to make this webpage.  Everything you are seeing in the image above is fake.

If you have concerns you can do more research and read more information about online scams at this website.  It is a government website, so it should be very helpful:  http://onguardonline.gov/index.html

Tech Tip: The most accurate weather websites.

Technology Tip:

The most accurate weather websites.

You may not know this but one of the inventors of the first electronic computer was a physicist with a passion for predicting the weather.  He figured that if he could just build an electronic calculator that was powerful enough he could use all the existing weather data and some special formulas to predict the weather.  It is therefore no irony at all that today we have quite a few super computers, all around the world, using electronic weather models to predict the weather.

Do you ever wonder how you could find the most reliable and most accurate websites for the weather? Check these out:

You could start with the National Weather Service:

There are also a lot of commercial weather sites you could check out like:
http://www.weatherstreet.com/
http://www.wunderground.com/
http://home.accuweather.com/
http://www.weather.com/

Outside the United States you could try the
World Meteorological Organization

And if that's not enough there's all those news websites that also offer weather forecasts.
As for which site is the most accurate, I would suggest the National Weather Service.  It normally is the most accurate and has an easy to follow layout and it is very easy to use. Click here to go to the website.

Have a great weekend!
