Technology Tip: How to automatically delete Chrome browsing data

Technology Tip:

How to automatically delete Chrome browsing data

Chrome is one of the most popular Web browsers, but sometimes a missing feature can be rather shocking. Automatically deleting things like your browsing and download history, cache, cookies, and even saved form data is missing from Chrome! You could do it manually every time you browse the Web, remember, or get paranoid, but you shouldn't have to.

That's why Click&Clean, a Chrome extension, exists. Not only does it offer more features than the standard check boxes built into Chrome, it also performs actions automatically. That's right, no remembering, lots of being lazy... I mean, doing other things.

First you'll want to install a copy of the Click&Clean extension into Chrome. Once you've done that, it's time to do some configuring so it can automatically work later.

Click on the new icon in your Chrome toolbar with the C on it. If a new tab doesn't open, and you see a menu instead, click the Options icon.

Samsung Series 9 (13-inch, 2012) NP900X3C-A01Next, click on Clear Private Data when Browser Closes. Uncheck the box next to Disable, and then start customizing which items you want deleted. You can also make the extension ask you before it deletes things each time.

This extension is great for those who use Chrome at work and want to ensure that none of their browsing habits, cookies, or other information stick around after punching out.

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the great service we get from your office.  I called Brittney yesterday for something that was not urgent and Percy was on it mid morning and accomplished the task.  It is a pleasure working with all of you.  Percy is such a nice gentleman and so polite as well as all your employees that I have met as well.   Brittney is a pleasure to speak with as well.

Hope all is going well for you.  Have a great day and again, I thank you and your staff!

-Gail

Just wanted to tell everyone thanks for the great service and great computer your team provided to me last week. We are extremely happy with our purchase. The transition to all of our data from our PC was seamless and went very smooth. Still learning the ins and outs but all is good. It is nice to see a business still exists that takes care of the customer. Please share with the rest of the team.

 Thanks again!!

Technology Tip: Search Google from Your Mobile Device with Your Handwriting

Technology Tip:

Search Google from Your Mobile Device with Your Handwriting

This article was reprinted from this LifeHacker article.

A new Google mobile search feature called Handwrite allows you to search Google using your handwriting rather than keyboard on your phone, tablet, or other touchscreen device.
You can see how it works in the video above. To enable it for your device:

Hit up google.com from your phone or tablet.
Click the Settings link at the bottom of the page. (On tablets, settings are in the top right corner of the page.)
Find and enable Handwrite in the settings.
Click Save and reload the page.
You should see a new Handwrite icon at the bottom right of the page. To start using it, just tap the icon and start tracing letters.

The first thing you'll notice trying it out is that it's really not for writing full words so much as a few letters at a time, or just getting started with your query. Google's autocomplete is good enough that you'll have a viable search in no time.

Flock Is a Dead Simple Way to Automatically Share Photos with the Friends You’re With

Note: The following article was reprinted from this LifeHacker article.

When you take a bunch of pictures with friends and family, the pictures usually end up scattered about on everyone's phones. Flock is a way to collect all those pictures into one shared album automatically so you can keep your event photos in one handy place.

Flock is easy to set up. Once you login with your Facebook credentials, the app finds your friends who are using Flock. When you're all in the same location together taking pictures, Flock automatically creates an album and shares all the pictures with everyone in the same location. That said, you still have control over which pictures of yours get shared, but for the most part it's an automatic process that brings together a group of pictures in one place. If you're looking for a means to keep track of event photos, or you have a large family that seems to snap pictures all the time, Flock is worth a look. It's a free download in the iTunes App Store.

Technology Tip: Malware, Viruses and now Ransomware?

Technology Tip:

Malware, Viruses and now Ransomware?

Malware that attempts to part victims from their money is nothing new.  Some viruses attempt to discover credit card information that can then be used or sold.  Other threats look to steal passwords to important accounts.  Phishing, which is not a virus at all, tries to trick users into providing login information to a fake website.

All of these tactics are behind the scenes, however.  The victim does not know when they work well.  There is another threat, called ransomware, that attempts to leverage the authority of some well-known organization to extract money directly from victims.  Here is how it works and what you can do to avoid it.

The concept behind ransomware is simple.  When the virus infects a computer it prevents the user from opening any programs or accessing any important system functions.
The simplest examples of this threat will only over-ride the normal Windows shell.  It may even modify the master boot record, which will send the user directly to a payment screen every time they attempt to boot their computer. All the user’s files are intact but they cannot be accessed through the operating system because of modifications to the interface.

Other threats will take matters a step further by encrypting files on the victim’s hard drive.  This makes them unreadable even if the victim attempts to extract them from another, uninfected computer.  Files that are encrypted are often effectively destroyed, since they cannot be read.

Some of the more recent examples of ransomware have begun to use extortion as an element.  Instead of making criminal threats, however, they make reference to legitimate organizations such as law enforcement.

One recent virus, called FBI Moneypak, informs victims that they have been found guilty of copyright violations and therefore need to pay a fine of $100 in order to unlock their computer.  A similar virus has targeted citizens of the United Kingdom since 2011.  It claims that the Metropolitan Police have connected the victim’s computer with child pornography and other crimes and the victim must pay 100 pounds to unlock their computer.

Some other recent viruses use established movie and music trade organizations instead of law enforcement and claim that the victim must pay to avoid further prosecution for copyright infringement. In all cases, posing as an authority gives the virus extra leverage because victims fear they will receive jail time or be sued if they don’t pay.
The people who want to take your money via a virus are not dumb.  They are always coming up with new and inventive tricks, the most of recent of which is the clever use of phone charges.

Ransomware that makes money in this way will not ask you to input payment information on your computer.  Instead, you will be asked to call or text a certain number.  In today’s wireless world many people forget that long distance calls still exist and can become extremely expensive.

A virus rolled out in 2011 used this trick.  It claimed the victim’s version of Windows had to be re-activated and provided a long-distance phone number. When a victim called, they were placed on hold to rack up charges.

Do not assume that a message is legitimate just because it asks you to make a call or send a text message.  You can be sometimes charged lots of sums for these every-day actions if you contact the wrong number.

What Can You Do To Avoid Ransomware?

There are no special steps that must be taken to avoid this threat.  It is different from other viruses because of its payload (the damage it causes to your computer) instead of the way it spreads.  You should protect your computer by installing an anti-virus and firewall.  You should also become familiar with best security practices such as avoiding malicious websites and email attachments.

If you are in doubt about a message that appears on your computer, leave your computer and look for information on another PC.  Never use a computer that you think has been infected by ransomware to find additional information about a virus.  It is not difficult for a virus to re-direct your web searches.

Remember, no law enforcement agency or company will take your computer hostage, so it is safe to assume any message asking that you pay to unlock your computer is the result of a virus.  Even Microsoft will not lock your computer if you do not pay for the operating system.

If you are worried your computer may be at risk for this feel free to contact us, we can help!  We have great programs that help protect against virus and malware for your computers.  If you do have an infection we can safely and completely remove it for you.

Technology Tip: Google adds a calculator to search results

Technology Tip:

Google adds a calculator to search results

Google has added a calculator to its search results.

When you type a formula into its search box, Google now will spit out the answer in a new calculator that it has brought to its results. Once the calculator is displayed, you can tap numbers and scientific functions to send it a new equation. The search box will also still work for that.

Prior to this addition, Google allowed users to type any equation into its search tool. The search engine would then spit out the answer. However, this is the first time that Google has displayed an actual calculator users can interact with.

Technology Tip: The top 3 blogging sites

Technology Tip:

The top 3 blogging sites

Starting a blog can be very easy considering all of the free blogging sites out there.  However, choosing between all of the best blogging sites can seem a bit confusing, especially if you are a first time blogger.  In this blog we have a list of the top 3 best blogging sites.

#1 WordPress
As far as theme and plugin selection, flexibility and support goes — WordPress trumps all.  Not only does the free, open-source blogging software allow you to blog for free on WordPress.com but you can also download a copy of WordPress (from WordPress.org) and install it on your own website using your own domain (like this website).  WordPress is by far the most popular blogging platform and one of the first to be completely user friendly — you do not need any coding experience to operate a WordPress blog. From optimizing your blog’s pages for search engines (for more traffic) to automatically creating share buttons at the bottom of each of your posts: WordPress plugins can do it all.  Designing your own WordPress theme is simple and easy and you do not need to be experienced with PHP, although it is recommended that you have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS if you want to alter your templates.  Premium themes (paid for) make it possible for you to create entirely custom themes without even knowing one line of HTML/CSS code.  You cannot place advertisements for your blog on free blogs hosted at WordPress.com but you can easily place advertisements on blogs that are self-hosted.  Support for WordPress at the forums are above par as you will usually get a response for a question within minutes.  WordPress is used by top bloggers like Perez Hilton, Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan and Michelle Malkin.

#2 Google Blogger
Now owned by Google and formerly known as Blogspot, Blogger is probably the most user friendly blogging platform out there.  You can set up as many free blogs as you would like from your Google account.  Traffic that you get from other blogs at Blogger.com through the next blog button at the top of every Blogger.com blog can sometimes be substantial. You can even monetize your blog with Google AdSense.  All you need is an AdSense account (from Google) and you can start earning money from people who click on your ads. Unfortunately there is only 16 templates to choose from (the we-know-better Google likes to keep things simple) but blogger does allow you to edit individual elements on your blog like the header, post section and gadget bar (sidebar) in your admin control panel.  Popular blogs hosted at Blogger.com include PostSecret and The Sartorialist.

#3 Tumblr
Tumblr is a free blogging platform and hosting service that has attracted a growing number of bloggers, in particular the visually-oriented who use their blogs to showcase photography, paintings, design, and other art.  Even more specifically than artists, bloggers who flock to Tumblr tend to also be light on type, unlike, say, recipe bloggers who mix photography with ample instructions and backstories about cooking.  Tumblr lets you set up and manage a free blog, which the site will host for you (provided you keep "tumblr" in the URL), all through a web portal.
Tumblr is highly similar to Posterous in that it aims to get new bloggers up and running very quickly meaning within minutes.  Tumblr and Posterous both simplify the process of designing and maintaining a blog for ultra beginners. Tumblr caters to entry-level bloggers, while WordPress.com and Google's Blogger have more to offer experienced bloggers.  However, seasoned bloggers sometimes pick up a Tumblr account for variety and set their primary blog to autopost to the secondary one.  The secondary site becomes a microblog, where casual readers can pop in too look at the latest pictures and captions without even having to load, much less read, the full text that might appear on the primary site

Technology Tip: YouTube now offers the feature of Face Blurring.

Technology Tip:

YouTube now offers the feature of Face Blurring.

Lately, YouTube has become an incredible tool for people to share videos online, sometimes people share their funny moments and some videos play a very important role in a social moment or even a revolution.

But again, there are people who do not upload videos because they do not have the ability to hide their identity by blurring out a part of the video.

Currently there is no such service offered by any video sharing website or a manufacturer, YouTube is the first one to bring out this type of feature.

This is an awesome tool because it will let you upload the controversial videos where you can blur out the faces of people you don’t want to show.  This gives the control of retaining the complete anonymity while spreading your message out.

You can find the option of blurring out the faces under additional features in the enhancements section of the video editor of YouTube video manager.  It will show the original video and the other video shows the applied effects. (See Image above).  If you are satisfied with the output, you can delete the original video.

Remember however, this is a new tool and might not work on all the videos as face recognition depends of the clarity of the video etc.

Technology Tip: Save the date! Windows 8 will be launched on October 26th

Technology Tip:

Save the date! Windows 8 will be launched on October 26th

Note: The following article is reprinted from this article techtip.org

Microsoft has finally announced the date for the launch of their much awaited Operating system Windows 8.

Microsoft released the release preview of Windows 8 on 1st June, which is the final beta version of Windows 8 and was downloaded more than 1 million times in first 24 hours of its release.

The number has increased to many more millions so far and it will be interesting to see how the number increases with the official launch on 26th October. I myself have been using Windows 8 release preview and it feels nice. The OS is stable and feels like the final build of Windows 8 but we may still see few small changes in the OS with the official launch.

With Windows 8, Microsoft brings the uniformity among between PCs and Tablet PCs. The metro style UI is the strongest thing people are talking about Windows 8. Microsoft has also upgraded their popular Office Suite to Microsoft Office 2013 which blends the MS Office with Windows 8 Metro UI.

Have a great weekend!

Technology Tip: Top 5 feed readers for Android

Technology Tip:

Top 5 feed readers for Android

Many people love reading articles from their favorite websites, did you know you can read them all in just one place on your phone?  Below listed are the top 5 feed readers for the Android.

Feedly

Many people suggest feedly because it is simple and fast.  It is said to work pretty well when the internet connection is slow.  There is no heavy design, just content.  Feedly also lets you share the content via Twitter and Facebook.

Google Reader

Google Reader is a web-based reader for RSS and Atom news feeds.  You can group and read your subscriptions using free labels.  Google Reader lets you tag, sort and organize individual items using labels. You can easily share items on a public web page that has an RSS feed itself, send them by email, or use tags for blogrolls.  A blog and news search engine makes it easy to find and subscribe to feeds.

Google Currents

Not many people know about Google Currents. This launched last December.  The magazine layout is quite clean and makes it easy to read the content. It also lets you download the content for offline reading. You can even customize your news feed by adding and removing editions; you can even go so far as to remove pre-loaded feeds. It's like creating your own personal 'newspaper'. The only downfall is that it is quite heavy and takes a lot of data.

Pulse

Pulse is very similar to Google currents but a bit faster and more responsive, and has the ability to explore more sources for content in your area of interest.  You are able to share content via Facebook and Twitter. They also have a Pulse.me feature which lets you save content to personal account.

Flipboard

As hit app on iPhone it was recently made available to Android. Flipboard brings together all your interests into an easy-to-read format. The interface is very clean and intuitive, and the ease with which you view content is made simpler still by the ability to select a full-screen mode and change the text size in the settings menu. The Search function is extremely easy to use. More importantly the speed of the app is fast.

Technology Tip: How to show your tweets as Facebook statuses!

Technology Tip:

How to show your tweets as Facebook statuses!

If you use social media a great amount, then you might be using Twitter and Facebook to update your status.

Both the websites are a little different from each other, but they do have one thing in common, interacting with people.

Here is what you can do to update or share things on both Twitter and Facebook at the same time.

Tweet Deck
It is a desktop application which lets you add multiple Twitter accounts (helpful if you have a personal twitter account and your company’s or website/blog’s twitter account).  You can also add your Facebook account and update your status on both Facebook and Twitter all at the same time.

HootSuite
It works exactly the same as Tweet Deck, but you do not have to download anything to your desktop.  You can use it right from your browser.

Facebook to Twitter (Facebook application)
If you use facebook primarily, you can set your Facebook updates to be tweeted in your twitter profile at the same time.  You can use this Facebook to Twitter application that is on Facebook to link to Twitter.

Twitter to Facebook
Now, this one is the opposite of the above.  If you use twitter primarily and want your tweets to show up in Facebook as status updates then you should use this application. Twitter to Facebook.

Selective Tweets (Facebook application)
This is a Facebook application called Selective Tweets.  This application lets you update your Facebook status from Twitter.  To avoid confusion, you can choose which tweets you want to show just end a tweet with #fb when you want to post it as your Facebook status/
