Technology Tip: IPhone apps that should be avoided

Technology Tip:

IPhone apps that should be avoided

The IPhone app library has topped 500,000, meaning that the app store has more apps than most US cities have people.  With the flood of apps available, there are a number of amazing choices to help you do everything from choose a restaurant to store data and play games.  The number of useless apps available has also increased exponentially.  So how can you weed through to find the good amongst the bad and the ugly?  Unfortunately, it is not always easy, but we can help you get started by sharing nine not so good apps.

1. iNap@Work

This app allows you to use your phone to mimic the sounds of typing an email, crinkling paper, using a stapler, or blowing your nose.  It does all of this in the name of napping.  People are not sure what is worse, sleeping on the job or hiding the fact that you are sleeping on the job.  Either way, this one tops the list of terrible apps.

2. Notes

This app is a standard with every iPhone and iPad.  You may be asking yourself how a basic app that’s sole purpose is to allow you to take notes on your phone could be bad.  Short answer: the font. Not only is the font very difficult to read (Google it for countless reviews if you do not believe this), there’s actually no way to change the font.  If you are developing an app where the sole purpose is to take notes, font face should be an important consideration.

3. Wall Street Journal

There have been numerous complaints about the WSJ app for the iPhone, from the cost of the app to the interface.  The biggest complaint is related to the interface.  The iPhone screen is simply too small for the app to function as it should.  Unless you have a magnifying glass on hand, stick to reading your WSJ articles on your internet browser.

4. Hold On

This falls under the category of useless apps. The point of the app is to press a button with your finger and see how long you can hold it.  It records your hold time.  So if you would like to sit there with your finger on your phone for hours, there is an app for that.

5. Pocket Heat

Would you like an app that turns your iPhone into a heater?  People who were hoping to use this app to keep their hands nice and warm in the winter were extremely disappointed.  For $0.99, it turns your iPhone into a picture of a heater with no actual warmth involved.  This app fails to be hot on multiple levels.

6. Flashlight

In theory, this app is a great idea but in practice, it does not really work.  The app turns your screen white, doing little to provide any additional lighting if you are struggling to find something in a dark room.  Take a pass and just use your phone’s backlighting, it works just as well.

7. iTan

iTan turns your phone into a tanning bed, complete with glowing blue lights and a timer to make sure you are not in there too long.  But if you are hoping to be tan during the winter, be aware that there is no actual tanning involved with this app. The best part seems to be that there is no need to worry about harmful UV rayshttp://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1744104002831685118#editor/target=post;postID=7814010739022036216!

8. Hello My Name Is

Do you know those silly stick on name badges you occasionally get to wear at conferences for work or maybe even for a class?  Now you can turn your phone’s screen into one of them just in case you would rather hang your phone around your neck so you can be identified at your next offsite event.

9. Airport Sounds

Maybe you are a frequent flier who has not flown in a few weeks or maybe you are preparing for your first air travel experience.  Just in case you are longing for the sounds of the airport, this app will help you out.

Now, do not let this list of ridiculous apps get you down; the app store has a great rating system you can use to help navigate and weed out the horrible apps!

Have a great day!!
